Pair of 300 games in singles at 2025 USBC Open Championships

Tanner Simmons

BATON ROUGE, La. –
Two bowlers delivered perfection in the early hours of Wednesday morning, each rolling 300 games just a few lanes apart at the 2025 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.

Tanner Simmons of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, and Garret Maxey of Greeley, Colorado, etched their names into the tournament’s record book during their singles squad at the Raising Cane’s River Center.

Simmons posted the 14th 300 of the 2025 event, while Maxey recorded No. 15 just minutes later.

Maxey fired a 740 series in Regular Singles, and Simmons wasn’t far behind, shooting 733. At the moment, Maxey’s score is in the top 50 at the 2025 USBC Open Championships, while Simmons’ total places him in the top 70.

Neither bowler posted a game below 200 during their singles set, with Maxey rolling 214, 226 and 300 and Simmons scoring 225, 208 and 300.

Garret Maxey“I have had over 40 (300s), and I still get nervous every time,” Maxey said. “But I told my buddy in the second frame, ‘I’m shooting 300 this game.’”

Now in his 22nd consecutive year of participation at the Open Championships, Maxey is no stranger to the national stage – or its pressure.

“I bowl in a Wednesday night scratch league that switches patterns every nine weeks,” Maxey said. “That’s helped me a lot. Bowling on a typical house shot does nothing for you.”

Maxey noted that while a 300 game was on his bucket list at the Open Championships, he is not finished yet.

“I have a list of what I want to do at nationals,” Maxey said. “A 300 is one of them – but I still haven’t shot 2,100.”

Maxey finished his 2025 event with an all-events total of 1,907, adding 626 in doubles and 541 in team.

Simmons, who also owns multiple certified 300 games, was left nearly speechless after his performance.

“I never would have thought that I could shoot a 300 at the Open Championships,” Simmons said. “I don’t even know how to explain it – it feels amazing. I’m still speechless.”

With this year being only his fourth time on the national stage, the nerves were high. While Simmons hasn’t yet competed on a national stage outside of the Open Championships, he keeps striving to put his name out there.

“I’d like to do some regionals and things like that – just see what happens,” said Simmons, who added 567 in doubles and 515 in team for an all-events tally of 1,815.
